The work of the 25 London Assembly Members is to hold the Mayor to account and investigate matters of interest to Londoners. Much of this is done through the monthly Mayor’s Question Time when members can put questions direct to the Mayor both orally and in the form of written questions.
As an Assembly Member, I raised a wide range of issues with Boris Johnson, the former Mayor – from why he failed to stand up for Londoners on the NHS, bedroom tax, youth unemployment and low pay and on his failure to tackle our air quality and safety issues for cyclists. The scrutiny role is central to the role irrespective of who is in power and so I will continue to highlight issues with the new Mayor, Sadiq Khan.
The Assembly also has a monthly plenary session and a series of Scrutiny Committees that undertake investigations in to specific areas, for example social housing, the changes to the NHS in London or low pay. I am Chair of the Economy Committee and a member of the Regeneration Committee and Education Panel.
Assembly members also undertake case work on behalf of their constituents in relation to the areas covered by the Greater London Authority and so please do get in touch if there is anything you would like raised with the Mayor or anything you require assistance with.
On behalf of the Labour Group, I shadow the Croydon & Sutton and Bexley & Bromley GLA Constituencies.
